What are the prerequisites for taking the PMP and CAPM exams?

The prerequisite for the PMP exam is 4.500 hours of project management experience for higher education (7.500 hours for intermediate education) and 35 hours of structured project management training according to the current PMBOK. For CAPM, 23 hours of structured project management training or 1,500 hours of project management experience.

How can you prove the prerequisites?

Project management experience is recorded electronically through project data sheets. For each project, a description of up to 555 characters, start and end date, name of the organisation, the number of hours of project management involved and, in the case of an audit, a certifying person must be provided. The training prerequisite must be recorded by providing the name of the training, its start and end dates and the number of hours.

What documents does PMI ask for when I apply?

At the time of application, PMI does not ask for any official project documents, due to the various confidentiality obligations, only the completed forms (certified by the person indicated in case of an audit) are required.

How do we describe our project experiences?

When describing project experience, the PMI checks whether the task in question was a project (start and end date, existence of a specific development or task or team) and whether the applicant can match his/her previous projects with those described in the PMBOK. It is not enough to list the deliverables and objectives, we always recommend that the applicant documents the experience along the process groups described in the PMBOK, which we will assist our participants in preparing.

How can PDUs be collected to maintain PMP?

There are several ways to collect PDUs, which can be demonstrated by attending training courses, individual development (e.g. reading textbooks, podcasts), internal knowledge sharing, giving presentations. You can find detailed information on this here.

What happens in case of an audit?

The PMI audits a random selection of applicants. It therefore accepts the experience formulated by default, but in the case of an audit, it requires verification. The application forms signed by the person providing proof, a copy of the certificate of completion of training and a copy of the diploma or degree must be sent to PMI by post.

What is R.E.P.?

R.E.P. stands for Registered Education Provider, which can be purchased from PMI by organisations providing educational services. Organisations with R.E.P. status can advertise their programmes free of charge on PMI's international platform and have 1 to 1 of their programmes audited by PMI every 3 years.

Can only an organisation with R.E.P. status give PDU points?

Definitely not. Any project management training provided by any organisation is worth PDUs, in some cases these can be justified by a description of the topic, perhaps a certificate of attendance, although this is rarely requested by PMI. Likewise, any organisation providing training in project management can provide evidence of the prerequisites for training in project management in the form of a signed certificate of attendance or a diploma or PMBOK based subject matter.

How is the exam? What is the pass mark?

The exam is a computer-based test with 200 questions in 4 hours for PMP and 150 questions in 3 hours for CAPM. In each case there are 4 options to choose from, no minus points. The questions can be modified after they have been answered. There is no fixed mark limit, the "value" of the questions is weighted by the PMI difficulty, so this may vary from exam to exam. After the exam, there is no possibility to view incorrect answers or questions, only information on the exam pass rate.

Where and when can I take the exam?

The PMP can be taken at the new location at BME Z, Bertalan Lajos u. 2, 1111 Budapest, Hungary, CAPM can be taken at several locations, even in the countryside, and with the help of a webcam and microphone, we can even take the exam at home. Exams can be attempted weekly on Mondays and Wednesdays.

How much does the exam cost?

The fee for the PMP exam is USD 555, and USD 405 for membership (USD 139/year). Membership does not cost extra, but it does have benefits (e.g. free electronic access to PMBOK), so we recommend that PMP applicants redeem it for one year. The CAPM examination fee is USD 300, for PMI members USD 225.

What do I need to prepare for the exam?

The PMI specifies the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) as the primary source, but other materials may be used in the exam.As of 26 March 2018, the PMBOK 6th edition will be used.

Why is preparatory training needed?

A preparation programme is not a prerequisite for the exam, but a quality programme can make it much easier. PMI examinations are notoriously difficult, and individual preparation can take up a lot of time and energy, not to mention the uncertainty of the result. In PMI's experience, the pass rate for first-time candidates is less than 50%, with a well designed program this number is above 90%.
