Guide to major project management certifications – Which one should you choose in 2026?

Fresh, 2026 guide for beginners and experienced project managers

The world of project management will enter a new era in 2026: hybrid operations will be the norm, AI integration will be a mature practice, agile operations will have grown into a holistic corporate framework, and organisations will be changing faster than ever before. In this environment, more and more people are looking for a qualification that demonstrates real professional competence, supports career development, and even opens the door to international opportunities.

This overview presents the most relevant project management, agile, and business analysis certifications in 2026, updated for the Hungarian market with the latest prerequisites and training fees applicable in 2026. Due to the large number of certifications available on the market, we have divided our guide into two parts. In this part, we present traditional project management and business analysis certifications, while the next article, to be published in January 2026, will cover agile certifications.

The aim was to compile an up-to-date guide that would help you navigate the myriad of options available — and support you in making the best decision for your career in 2026.

Project management certification overview

Why is it worth obtaining a project management qualification in 2026?

The role of the modern project manager will take on entirely new dimensions by 2026. Planning and reporting are no longer enough: today, a PM must be able to confidently manage hybrid teams, be capable of effectively using AI tools and automation solutions, and keep business value creation in mind in every decision. In addition, it has become increasingly important to respond quickly and maturely to change and to be able to coordinate expectations and work in a multi-level stakeholder environment.

In this environment, a well-chosen qualification can provide a huge competitive advantage. Not only does it give you strong professional credibility, but it also helps you achieve higher positions or more favourable pay scales. For many professionals, a qualification is the gateway to a new industry — for example, from IT to manufacturing, or vice versa. In addition, the learning process required to obtain certification prepares you for more structured, measurable and predictable work: this kind of conscious methodological development will be valued in almost every organisation in 2026.

How to choose a qualification in 2026?

One of the most important aspects of choosing a certification remains the existing professional experience, which is a prerequisite for many training courses and examinations. It is also important to note that the certifications were not created with the same goal in mind: some support leadership skills, others methodological knowledge, and still others practical agile operation.

In 2026, it is particularly worthwhile to choose a qualification that:

  • fits your career plan
  • adds a new methodological perspective
  • (or) supplements and deepens your existing professional knowledge

Professional mobility is accelerating in the world of projects — PMs often change positions, industries or methodologies. The right certification provides a stable foundation and competitive advantage in this dynamic environment.

Detailed description of project management certifications

PMI PMP certification and exam information

PMP® – Project Management Professional

PMP is one of the world's best-known and most prestigious project management certifications, opening doors globally. It is based on the PMBOK Guide (Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge), which is based on real project situations and certifies that the project manager has a high level of professional experience and structured knowledge in the field of project management, as well as knowledge of best practices, methods and the code of ethics in project management. An additional advantage is that it is updated every 3-4 years in line with market trends and changes.

The 8th edition of PMBOK is expected to be released in January 2026. Key changes include the reorganisation of processes along performance areas and a greater emphasis on current industry trends such as the use of AI, sustainable project management and hybrid methodologies. The new edition places greater emphasis on data-driven decision-making, digital risk management and automation, helping project managers respond confidently to the challenges of the digital age.

In addition to the new professional material, the PMP examination system will also change from July 2026. It will feature new content and structure, focusing on the reorganisation of the three main domains (People, Processes, Business Environment), with the weighting of Agile and hybrid methodologies increasing from 50% to 60%. The new exam will also introduce new question types, such as a case study section, graphic and drag-and-drop questions, which are designed to provide a more realistic assessment.

SUMMARY

PMP certification offers significant benefits in terms of professional development and recognition, but it also requires commitment and perseverance to obtain and maintain.

WHO IS IT RECOMMENDED FOR?

Experienced PMs, middle and senior managers, programme and portfolio managers who already have experience in project management and would like to have their professional knowledge and competencies certified in an internationally recognised manner.

An ideal choice for those who are looking to advance their careers and are targeting positions where structured project management knowledge is required or a significant advantage.

PREREQUISITES

There are two ways to meet the prerequisites for registering for the PMP exam:

  • In the case of higher education (university or college) qualifications, at least 36 months of project management experience in the last 8 years, as well as completion of a minimum of 35 hours of formal project management training.
  • For secondary education, at least 60 months of experience and 35 hours of formal training are also required.
  • Applicants must provide detailed information about their project management experience in the PMI online system, and in some cases, the PMI may audit the data, requiring proof of experience and training certificates.

TRAINING TIME

35 hours of classes + 2-3 months of independent preparation.

TRAINING FEE

USD 1000–1500 (based on international trainers) – Our official PMP exam preparation guide is available in Hungarian/English here.

EXAM (until July 2026)

  • in English
  • 180 computer-based test questions
  • in 230 minutes

EXAM (after July 2026)

  • in English
  • 185 computer-based test questions, which already include the new case study section and graphics-based questions
  • 240 minutes

EXAM FEE

  • For non-PMI members: 655 USD
  • USD 405 for PMI members

MAINTENANCE

  • Renewable every three years by collecting 60 Professional Development Units (PDUs)

CAPM® – Certified Associate in Project Management

CAPM is one of the most important entry-level certifications in project management, created by the PMI (Project Management Institute) for those who want to start a career in project management based on structured foundations.

The certification confirms that the applicant is familiar with the main concepts, principles and frameworks of project management and is able to navigate the structure, roles and processes of projects. CAPM is particularly useful for those preparing for their first PM role, working in a supporting position (PMO, project coordinator) or planning to take the PMP exam at a later date.

The exam, which will be updated between 2023 and 2025, will incorporate hybrid and agile operations, rather than being based solely on the classic process framework of the PMBOK® Guide. The exam tasks emphasise understanding the project life cycle, clarifying roles and responsibilities, and knowledge of basic project management techniques.

CAPM provides a stable starting point for those entering the PM field, which can later be easily developed with additional, more advanced certifications (such as PMP or PMI-ACP).

SUMMARY

The CAPM certification is the right combination of professional grounding, project management terminology and disciplined exam preparation — especially for those who are just starting their project management careers.

WHO IS IT RECOMMENDED FOR?

CAPM is an ideal choice for those who:

  • career starters who want to gain a foothold in the field of project management
  • work in an administrative or coordinating role (PMO, project assistant)
  • plan to take the PMP exam later and want to build a strong foundation first
  • would like to learn about international project management standards within a formal framework
  • work in an area where the industry expects structured PM knowledge (IT, finance, SSC, engineering support)

CAPM is particularly useful for those who do not have several years of project management experience but would like to quickly enter the profession and commit to project management.

PREREQUISITES

The requirements for registering for the CAPM exam are less stringent than those for the PMP:

  • Secondary education (school leaving certificate or global equivalent)
  • 23 hours of formal project management training before the exam begins
  • No project management experience is required, and there is no auditing with the same rigour as PMP.

Applicants must upload certificates of formal training hours to the PMI system. This requirement not only provides a framework for preparation, but may also be part of the prerequisites for the subsequent PMP exam.

TRAINING TIME

A three-day intensive training course is recommended for preparation, which also covers the required 23 training hours – this is usually followed by two to four weeks of individual preparation for the exam.

The study time is considerably shorter than for the PMP, but the examination still requires detailed conceptual knowledge.

TRAINING FEE

USD 600–1000 (depending on provider and format).

This typically includes instruction, course material, and guidance on registering for the examination. Our official CAPM exam preparation guide is available in Hungarian/English here.

EXAM

The CAPM exam format has been modernised in recent years, and according to PMI trends, it may move towards real business situations in the future.

  • in English
  • 150 computer-based test questions
  • 180 minutes

EXAM FEE

  • For non-PMI members: USD 300
  • USD 225 for PMI members

MAINTENANCE

Renewable every three years by collecting 15 professional credits (Professional Development Units, PDUs)

PRINCE2® Foundation & Practitioner

PRINCE2® (Projects IN Controlled Environments) is one of Europe's best-known and most widely used project management methodologies, particularly popular among organisations operating in regulated, process-driven environments.

The two levels of PRINCE2 — Foundation and Practitioner — provides a structured approach to project management based on clear roles, processes and management principles. The methodology focuses on ensuring that the project continuously creates business value, progresses in a controlled manner, and that all stakeholders have a clear understanding of their responsibilities.

Over the past few years, PRINCE2 has been updated to become more modern and flexible: the 7th edition places great emphasis on culture, a behaviour, the integration of agile elements and to make the methodology easier to apply in different environments. This means that PRINCE2 provides an effective framework not only for classic waterfall projects, but also for hybrid operations — and more and more organisations are using it in combination with other PM frameworks (e.g. PMBOK, Scrum, SAFe).

SUMMARY

PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner are excellent choices for those who want to understand the logic behind controlled project management and learn a methodology that provides clear guidance and transparency for both clients and professionals.

WHO IS IT RECOMMENDED FOR?

PRINCE2 is particularly valuable for the following professionals:

  • project managers and project coordinators who wish to apply a structured methodology
  • PMO professionals and managers who want to implement a unified management system
  • those working in the public sector, finance, energy and large corporations
  • those who are already familiar with agile methods but would like to understand traditional control mechanisms as well
  • business analysts, product managers or programme office professionals who are frequently involved in managed projects

The PRINCE2 Practitioner level is recommended for those who wish to apply the methodology in real projects and are able to make decisions in complex situations based on PRINCE2 principles.

PREREQUISITES

There are no official prerequisites for the PRINCE2 Foundation exam, although intermediate English language skills are recommended, as the exam and course material are generally in English.

However, there is a prerequisite for applying for the PRINCE2 Practitioner exam: only those who have already successfully passed the PRINCE2 Foundation exam are eligible to take it.

TRAINING TIME

The training typically consists of two modules:

  • Foundation: It is recommended to participate in a 3-day intensive course.
  • Practitioner: It is recommended to participate in an additional 2-day advanced training course.

The two modules can therefore be completed in five consecutive days, but many people study them in separate weeks.

Overall, preparation is supplemented by 2–4 weeks of home study, especially at the Practitioner level, where exam questions are based on more complex, application-focused tasks.

Of course, it is also possible for everyone to prepare for the exam individually.

TRAINING FEE

The price of PRINCE2 training courses can vary significantly depending on the format of the course. The cost is primarily influenced by whether it includes live teaching, how long access to the course material is available, and whether an exam voucher is included.

  • PRINCE2 Foundation course and exam: HUF 350,000 – HUF 450,000 + VAT
  • PRINCE2 Practitioner course and exam: HUF 350,000 – HUF 450,000 + VAT
  • Take2 exam retake: 18,000 HUF – 23,000 HUF + VAT

Our official PRINCE2 exam preparation courses are available here.

EXAM

The Foundation exam primarily assesses conceptual understanding of methodology.

  • computer-based test
  • 60 questions
  • 60 minutes
  • Success rate: 55%

The Practitioner examination is based on real-life decision-making situations and tests how candidates apply the PRINCE2 principles in different project environments.

  • more complex, application-based examination
  • 70 scenario-based questions
  • 150 minutes
  • Success rate: 55%
  • „Open book”, i.e. the official PRINCE2 handbook may be used during the examination.

EXAM FEE

For Hungarian trainers, the exam fee is typically included in the total package price, which covers the training, the official course materials and the exam.

MAINTENANCE

The Foundation certification does not expire on its own, but the Practitioner certification can only be used if the status is valid.

The Practitioner certification is valid for three years and can be renewed in two ways:

  • by passing a new examination, or

by accumulating credits in the PeopleCert continuing professional development (CPD) system

IPMA certifications and exam information

IPMA A/B/C/D – International Project Management Association certifications

The IPMA (International Project Management Association) project management certification system is one of the most widely used competency-based frameworks in Europe, measuring the project management knowledge and experience of professionals across four levels.

What makes IPMA certifications unique is that they do not solely assess theoretical knowledge: candidates practical experience, behavioural competencies and leadership maturity are also valued. Therefore, for those who wish to demonstrate their ability to work effectively on real projects, IPMA is a particularly relevant choice.

How is IPMA different from other PM certifications?

While many other PM certifications are primarily exam-oriented, IPMA examines the candidate as a whole: it uses portfolios, interviews, case studies and competency tests. The four levels of the system (A, B, C, D) cover the entire spectrum of project maturity, from beginner to portfolio manager, so anyone can find the level that suits their career.

SUMMARY

IPMA certifications are suitable for those who want competence-based recognition and want to have their real-life project management practice certified by an international organisation.

WHO IS IT RECOMMENDED FOR?

IPMA certifications are particularly useful for those who:

  • are seeking a qualification that is also available in Hungarian
  • work for an organisation where portfolio or programme management plays a key role
  • want to validate not only theory, but also everyday PM practice,
  • have project experience and would like to validate it at a higher level,
  • are involved in large-scale corporate, industrial, engineering, development or public sector projects

Of the four levels:

  • IPMA D: For career starters, junior PMs, coordinators
  • IPMA C: For independent project managers, those responsible for small to medium-sized projects
  • IPMA B: Managers of larger projects, senior PMs,
  • IPMA A: Ideal for programme and portfolio managers, senior managers

PREREQUISITES

The prerequisites for IPMA certifications vary depending on the level, as the system is based on the candidate's actual project management experience. The assessment is not only paper-based, but also includes interviews and practical examples. At higher levels (A, B), proof of project portfolio and level of responsibility is crucial.

IPMA D – Certified Project Management Associate

  • No project management experience is required.
  • Knowledge of PM fundamentals (through training or practice) is sufficient.

IPMA C – Certified Project Manager

  • Typically 3+ years of project management experience (may vary by country)
  • As with higher levels, it is mandatory to compile a portfolio demonstrating proven independent management of small to medium-sized projects.

IPMA B – Certified Senior Project Manager

  • Minimum 5 years project management experience, of which 3 years in complex projects
  • Proven experience in managing complex, high-budget projects or projects involving multiple teams

IPMA A – Certified Projects Director

  • At least 5 years program or portfolio management experience
  • At least 3 years in managing complex projects
  • Proven strategic project management experience.

 TRAINING TIME

The duration of IPMA training courses depends on the level and trainer, but generally:

  • IPMA D: 3–5 days of training + 1–3 weeks of preparation
  • IPMA C: 4–6 days of training + portfolio compilation (several weeks)
  • IPMA B/A: flexible, personalised coaching + several weeks/months of preparation for documentation and interviews

Most of the time spent is on documenting the portfolio and competencies, which is a unique feature of the IPMA system.

TRAINING FEE

Prices vary by country and trainer, but the following ranges are typical in Hungary and internationally:

  • IPMA A: individual pricing (typically above HUF 450,000, up to HUF 600,000+)
  • IPMA B: 300,000 – 450,000 HUF
  • IPMA C: 200,000 – 320,000 HUF
  • IPMA D: 120,000 – 200,000 HUF

The fees typically include training, preparation and administration of the exam application.

EXAM

A distinctive feature of IPMA examinations is that they use not only test questions, but also competency assessments, case studies and interviews.

IPMA D

  • written test (usually multiple choice)
  • also available in Hungarian

IPMA C

  • portfolio submission
  • written examination + personal interview

IPMA B

  • detailed portfolio
  • written assessment + multi-stage interview process

IPMA A

  • portfolio
  • strong emphasis on the interview and validation of practical experience

EXAM FEE

  • IPMA D: 80,000 – 120,000 HUF
  • IPMA C: 120,000 – 200,000 HUF
  • IPMA B: 180,000 – 300,000 HUF
  • IPMA A: individual pricing (300,000+ HUF)

MAINTENANCE

The validity of IPMA certifications is generally 5 years, after which renewal is required, which:

  • by re-certifying competencies
  • through further training sessions and sharing experiences
    happens

In most cases, a new examination is not necessary, but updating the portfolio is mandatory.

Six Sigma certifications and exam information

Six Sigma - White/Yellow/Green/Black Belt

Six Sigma is one of the most widely used methodologies in process improvement and quality management, based on data-driven decision-making, statistical tools and the reduction of errors and losses. This is the only certification on the list that cannot be issued by a specific organisation, as the methodology was not (and still is not) the property of a single global organisation: although Motorola was one of the original developers, over time, Six Sigma has spread to various industries and organisations — so there is no “central owner” who would prescribe all uses and thus official exams and exam requirements.

The Six Sigma certification family offers certifications at several levels, primarily for those involved in process improvement projects, as follows:

In the White Belt level is the entry level for Six Sigma, providing a comprehensive overview of the fundamentals of the methodology, its terminology and the DMAIC process (Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control).
The aim of White Belt is to enable participants to understand the process development approach and to be able to support development projects running within the organisation at a basic level.

In the Yellow Belt level provides a deeper understanding of Six Sigma methodology, with particular emphasis on the DMAIC steps and support for development projects.
Participants will learn about the most important diagnostic and data collection tools and will be able to independently lead smaller development tasks or participate in Green/Black Belt projects.

In the Green Belt level already provides serious professional knowledge, which enables participants to independently lead development projects and use statistical tools to identify root causes. Green Belt professionals are able to coordinate teams, perform data analysis, and implement process improvements that result in significant savings.

In the Black Belt level is the highest level of Lean Six Sigma before Master Black Belt. Black Belt professionals manage development programmes at the organisational level, mentor Green Belts, and apply complex statistical, data modelling, and change management tools. Their goal is to deliver strategic results in process improvement, with significant cost reductions, quality improvements, and business impact.

SUMMARY

Six Sigma certifications are particularly recommended for those working in process development, Lean Six Sigma projects, and project and programme managers. Given that there are no central requirements for issuing certificates, the value of certifications may vary depending on the training institution issuing them and the strictness of the conditions for issuing the certification.
