Agile team maturity
and readiness assessment
What does agility mean at the team level?
At the team level, agility is not primarily about tools or roles, but about how effectively a team can deliver value independently, collaboratively, and continuously. Teams start from different points, and expecting immediate, high-level autonomy is not always realistic.
High-performing teams share a common trait: they build on their existing ways of working and improve step by step—enhancing collaboration, processes, and decision-making. Many teams attempt to adopt agile methods (e.g. Scrum, Kanban) without having a clear understanding of their current way of working and its constraints.
As a result, tools may be introduced, but the way of working does not meaningfully change. Teams become overloaded, and the expected improvements fail to materialise.
Experience shows that real progress does not start with adopting a new methodology, but with a conscious understanding of the current state.
Common symptoms at the team level:
- Agile tools are in use, but delivery remains difficult
- Frequent replanning and interruptions
- Strong dependencies on other teams or stakeholders
- Unclear goals, priorities, or responsibilities
- Decisions are made outside the team
- The team’s way of working is unpredictable and hard to plan
The real differentiator is how well a team can integrate agile principles into its own way of working.
This is where our team maturity assessment helps: it provides a clear view of your current state and supports you in identifying the next realistic steps in your development.

What do we measure?
Team structure
How stable the team is and how independently it can operate: from frequently changing setups with strong external dependencies to stable teams capable of delivering value end-to-end.

GOALS & DIRECTION
How well the team understands and follows its goals: from unclear or shifting expectations to clear, shared objectives that guide daily work.
Work Management
How structured the team’s work is: from ad hoc task handling to a well-maintained backlog and conscious, iterative planning.
DELIVERY CAPABILITY
How effectively the team can deliver value continuously: from slow delivery with many handoffs and dependencies to fast and predictable value delivery.
DEPENDENCY
MANAGEMENT
To what extent the team depends on others: from frequent blockers to proactively managed and minimised dependencies.
MEASUREMENT
& FEEDBACK
How the team uses data to improve: from little or no measurement to actively tracking and improving performance.
Learning &
Development
How consciously the team develops its way of working: from occasional improvements to continuous learning and experimentation.
DECISION-MAKING
Where decisions are made: from outside the team to increasingly within the team, close to the work.

COLLABORATION
The nature of collaboration within and across teams: from siloed work to active, supportive, and aligned collaboration.
AGILE TEAM MATURITY AND READINESS LEVELS

AD HOC OPERATION
The team’s way of working is not yet consistently structured; tasks, responsibilities, and priorities frequently change.
EMERGING OPERATION
The team has established some ways of working (e.g. backlog, planning), but their use is not yet consistent.
STRUCTURED OPERATION
The team’s way of working is stable and consciously designed, with processes and collaboration that are predictable.
OPTIMISED OPERATION
The team operates at a high level: autonomous, collaborative, and continuously improving.
