Arrival of PMBOK 6th edition - updated

Update

Official launch of the new edition September 2017 is expected, but there is no information about the Hungarian release yet.

New edition of PMBOK

A PMI updates the PMBOK Guide containing the PMP exam material at certain intervals. This is expected to happen again this year, so the current exam is expected to be updated in January-February 2018, which means that it will be possible to take the PMBOK version 5 exam until then.
Of course, we will keep track of the changes in PMBOK version 6, and new knowledge areas and processes are expected to be added in the new release. Interestingly, with the new release, the business analysis (PMI-PBA) and the project management (PMP/CAPM) processes are brought even closer together.

Main changes:

  • 3 new processes appear (Manage Project Knowledge, Control Resources, Implement Risk Responses)
  • 1 process disappears (Close Procurements, which is merged into the Close Project or Phase process)
  • 2 knowledge areas are renamed (HR instead of Project Resource Management, Time Management instead of Project Schedule Management)
  • Processes will be renamed (Quality Assurance instead of Manage Quality, Plan HR Management instead of Plan Resource Management, Acquire Project Team instead of Acquire Resources, Control Communications instead of Monitor Communications, Control Risks instead of Monitor Risks, Plan Stakeholder Management instead of Plan Stakeholder Engagement and Control Stakeholder Engagement instead of Monitor Stakeholder Engagement)
  • Chapter titles and order are revised
  • The book highlights the continuous and non-continuous steps in the project process
  • Inputs, tools and techniques, as well as outputs, are simplified and more logically connected
  • Escalating risk as a strategy emerges
  • Continuous updating of lessons learned documentation throughout the projects becomes even more useful
  • The Earned Schedule Management tool appears
  • The distinction between the terms project and product scope is even more pronounced in the business analysis (PMI-PBA) processes
  • Link with agile approaches - PMBOK version 6 will help to integrate the PMI methodology into the agile project management environment, and will also cover tools and techniques that can be used in agile project management.
